JIB & ICHEF: The First ICT-Enabled Hospitality & Culinary Schools in Mindanao

Students at JIB schools continue to enjoy innovative learning tools and better classroom experience. With the successful integration of Information and Communication Technology or ICT into the total learning process at JIB Career Center in Davao City, ICHEF Davao City, and they have become the first ICT-enabled hospitality and culinary schools in Mindanao.

All of the classrooms in these schools have LCD Projectors, projector screens, computers and interactive boards.

The audio-visual room is equipped with widescreen interactive whiteboards. An interactive whiteboard or IWB is a large interactive display that combines the simplicity of a whiteboard, power of a computer and front projection. The interactive whiteboards engage students with vivid pictures, video, and fine audio.

The entire building has wireless technology that allows students to have maximum access to research materials. Videos and other learning materials are all interactive.

Instructional Materials used by the teachers are downloaded from the moodle to ensure uniformity and adherence to standards in the delivery of major subjects. Moodle is a learning management system to help educators create effective online learning communities. Moodle has been adopted by many educational institutions worldwide and is steadily gaining prominence in many schools.

All JIB and ICHEF students and employees have RFID-Smart cards in lieu of the regular ID cards to ensure security. Students swipe these cards in the turnstiles installed at all entrance and exit points. This also records attendance and keeps track of student's tardiness. These RFID Smart Cards can also be used in the library and the issuing of stocks and materials for laboratory purposes. For better monitoring of activities, CCTV cameras are installed in all hallways and classrooms.

JIB Schools are also using textbooks in hospitality, tourism and culinary with as access key and features interactive learning exercises simulating actual work environment. They can do actual hotel operations tasks and systems such as Front Office Operations.

JIB and ICHEF Students are also members of the E-Global Café where they can meet and talk with hospitality and culinary students of the American Hospitality Schools. They share recipes, cultural experiences, school insights, and career opportunities worldwide.

This innovative ICT-enabled learning environment has resulted to practical outcomes that have improved teaching, learning, curriculum and systems in the school.

JIB Career Center Chair Joji Ilagan Bian says, "We will be introducing more innovative practices through the use of technology. Even our Tumble Tots preschool has electronic boards, CCTV cameras, and wifi... The JIB schools offer the widest range of courses in Hospitality, Hotel, Tourism and Culinary Management. JIB offers international credentials and diploma to all its students. These Dual Certifications enhance the graduates' career mobility in the future."
